The Star Trek Cycling Event
… was founded in Star, NC in 2012 to showcase the beautiful rolling hills and scenic rural roads of Montgomery County, North Carolina
One day David Wilkie was talking with Nick Fruin (a resident glass artist at StarWorks) about how nice our county’s roads are for riding, thanks to the rolling hills, beautiful scenery, and low traffic volume. Eddie Bernard overheard them and mentioned that it might be nice to officially invite more people to come and enjoy our roads by creating a cycling event. We did just that!
In 2015 the event was adopted by the town of Star’s Heritage Committee, and participation leapt from twenty-two to eighty-seven riders thanks to the larger committee and numerous sponsors.
Now, in it’s sixth year, the ride continues on the first Saturday of June to coincide with the town of Star’s annual Heritage Day.
Each year we donate proceeds to a worthy cause:
2012 through 2014 – The Town of Star
2015 – Eckerd Camp in Candor, NC
2016 & 2017 – Montgomery County Family Crisis Center

Dear Star Trek Organizers:
Thank you for a fantastic 4th Annual Star Trek! I really enjoyed the ride. Of course, the weather was perfect.
This event displayed great organization from the start – ideal restroom facilities, a shady sign-in area, helpful volunteers. Couldn’t ask for better. Easy and efficient. Great job on the pre-ride announcements, and the sheriff’s escort was splendid! All of this shows that the community is really behind the event. The post-ride lunch was ample, delicious, and served with appreciative smiles.
The route took us into the rural beauty of the area straight away, and before we knew it, we were on Flint Hill Road – the foothills of the Uwharries! We passed through the communities of Black Ankle and Lovejoy before cruising through Troy.
